The first of Tranz Scenic's new fleet of

purpose built carriages has rolled out in

Dunedin and will significantly enhance

the opportunity to experience South

Island scenery, says the tourism rail

operator.

"This new fleet will provide TranzAlpine

and TranzCoastal passengers with a

modern travel and tourism experience

the equal of anything in the world," says

Tom Evers-Swindell, KiwiRail's Tranz

Scenic manager. "With a smooth ride,

modern stylish interior, on board

displays and panoramic windows we can

provide the best view of the stunning

landscape."

To capture the dramatic coastal and

mountain views, the new carriages will

each feature over 53sq m of glass, in

overhead HD video.

The carriage interiors feature a wood

paneling roof, NZ-designed and made

comfort seats, some of which can swivel

to face the direction of travel, and

automatic opening interior doors.

The carriage bogies have rubber

primary springs and secondary air bags /

rubber springs to provide a quieter,

smoother ride. There will also be

refurbished and upgraded open air

carriages.

The new fleet will be launched later this

year on scheduled services from

Christchurch on the world famous

TranzAlpine to the West Coast and the

TranzCoastal, which travels along the

Pacific coast to Picton, meeting the

Interislander ferry link to Wellington.

panoramic side and roof windows. To

enhance the onboard experience, each

activated announcements in five languages

at the seat plus information.
